In Like Normal water for Candy and The Property of the State of mind, respective creators Laura Esquivel and Isabel Allende make use of a connection with the supernatural to empower the protagonists in three ways. First of all, the central characters in each story possess exceptional otherworldly skills, which enable them to range themselves off their oppressors. Second, the unnatural is energetic in offering spiritual treatment of those in dire circumstances. Finally, supernatural events are responsible for the eventual suppression of the main antagonist of each novel, plus the subsequent freedom of the protagonists. In both equally novels, the oppressors of the central character types desire to control them entirely, however , the protagonists possess unique skills which come with their aid. In the home of the Spirits, author Mas alla uses Esteban Trueba's desire and requirement to possess his wife Clara entirely, to portray the view outside the window that in Latin American culture, there exists an implication of feminine inferiority and submissiveness in relationships. Alla, however , conveys a negative perspective of this social expectation, by giving Clara great abilities which usually sustain her, allowing her to detach herself from him and be self-employed. The reader understands that Esteban desires " far more than her physique; he desired control over that undefined and luminous material that place within herвЂ¦вЂќ (Allende 111). The use of mysterious realism in this description of Clara's " undefined and luminousвЂќ element emphasises her otherworldly character, creating an image of a light which Esteban cannot grasp with his hands, for his fingers merely pass through. It truly is precisely this supernatural element of Clara's personality which gives her strength, freedom and the power to resist domination by Esteban. " This individual realised that Clara did not belong to him and that if she continued living in a world of apparitions вЂ¦ the girl probably under no circumstances wouldвЂќ (Allende 118). Clara's clairvoyance and preoccupation with spirits stop Esteban via controlling her. Whilst this individual becomes more and more enraged in the unbridgeable range between them, Clara is articles, strong and empowered, hence defying the Latin American culture of female inferiority which is intended in the book.
In Just like Water for Chocolate, Mother Elena contains a similar passion to Esteban's, in desiring to control her daughter Tita's every push. Through her description from the de la Garza family tradition, the author portrays Latin American culture since giving family members values great importance.
